Thunderkick is really great about giving players atypical situations in online slots that actually make a lot of sense. While they don't have some overwhelming number of games with non-standard formats, when they do make these games, they're presented with features and an overall theme that go together well. This is the case with their Zoom online slot, a game that does not look like any other online slot we have ever seen before in our reviews.

Format and Layout

The format of this video slot is important because it drives so much of how the game plays. There are a total of six reels and four rows of symbols, creating a 6x4 grid of 24 spots. However, you'll notice that they are divided up into six squares that are 2x2 spots each. This is important for the gameplay and the features, which we'll talk about below.

In terms of bet sizes, you can choose total bet sizes ranging from $0.10 to $100 per spin, which is interesting because there are so many paylines. The things themselves are based on your bet size and not any payline-based business, which makes things much easier to follow than what you normally find in slots.

Zoom Areas and Massive Symbols

Thunderkick has broken this game up into six boxes that are known as Zoom Areas. If you get a Zoom Symbol inside of a Zoom Area, then it will expand to cover that entire 2x2 area, and you'll see the whole spot spin to determine the symbol that will effectively cover all four spots. Once you get a Zoom Symbol, you get a free re-spin with that symbol held in place. More Zoom Symbols mean more free re-spins, which can lead to some serious multi-line wins across multiple re-spins all for the cost of your original turn.

The Super Massive Symbol

The key to the largest wins in this game is the Super Massive Symbol. The way this works is that if during a single game round (including re-spins) you pick up Zoom Symbols in four different Zoom Areas that form a square (ie: a 4x4 square of symbols total), then they will all combine to give you a Super Massive Symbol that covers the entire spot. This gives you a free re-spin as well, and it has the potential to give you some really serious payoffs because it forces the same symbol to be active on so many different paylines across all four involved reels.

Symbols and Winning Combinations

There are wilds in this game, but they do not get their own winning combinations. They can also be the symbol that shows up on the Zoom Areas for the Massive Symbols and Super Massive Symbols if you're lucky. The symbol set in this game is based primarily on classic slot symbols re-imagined with high-quality graphics, but your total wins are based on a multiple of your bet size. We'll assume a bet size of $1.00 for these payouts listed below, but you'll need to scale your wins accordingly based on your own bet size.

Six of the star symbol pays $12.50, and six of the lucky seven gives you a $7.00 win. You can pick up $5.00 for six of the bell, and six of the grape is worth $4.00. They also have a $3.50 prize for six of the watermelon, $3.00 for six of the lemon and $2.50 for six of the cherry symbol. These are some balanced pays, but remember that the major wins in the game come from getting several different payouts at the same time, so you can really end up with some massive prizes.

Overview

Zoom is a really great online slot with a much different type of gameplay than what we've seen before. Thunderkick has done an excellent job with this game, and we're excited that it is available on the Microgaming Quickfire platform as per their content distribution agreement. This agreement will allow so many more people to get access to this game, and we really think that this could inspire future slots to use atypical formats in such an intelligent way as what we have seen here. Overall, it's certainly possible that this could be a game that inspires future trends from other online casino software providers.
