Sticky and non-sticky bonuses compared
- Balances. A non-sticky bonus gives you a cash balance and a bonus balance. A sticky bonus mixes the two.
- Order of play. With a non-sticky bonus, bets are taken from your cash balance first. The bonus balance is used only when the cash is gone.
- Withdrawing early. With a non-sticky bonus you can usually withdraw your cash balance before you meet the wagering requirement, but you give up the bonus. With a sticky bonus you cannot withdraw until the requirement is met.
- Wagering. The requirement applies to the bonus. Casinos set their own rules on whether winnings from cash play count towards it, so read the terms.
Some casinos use other names for the same idea, such as cash-first or parachute bonus. Terms differ from casino to casino. Always read how the casino describes its offer.
An example
You deposit 100 and receive a bonus of 100. The wagering requirement is 35x the bonus, which is 35 x 100 = 3,500 in bets.
- Non-sticky. You start with 100 in cash and 100 in bonus. You play with the cash. If you win and withdraw, the bonus is cancelled and the 3,500 never applies. If you lose the cash, the bonus balance comes into play and the 3,500 applies to it.
- Sticky. You start with 200 in one balance. You cannot withdraw until you have bet 3,500. When you do withdraw, the casino usually takes the bonus amount off your balance.
The numbers are only an example. Your casino may handle winnings, game contributions and cancelled bonuses in another way.
Which type suits you?
A non-sticky bonus gives you more control. You can walk away with your cash if your luck is good early on. It also gives you less chance to play on a larger balance from the start.
A sticky bonus gives you a larger balance to play with from the first bet. The money is locked until you have played through it. If you do not want to deal with wagering at all, look at no wagering bonuses.
What to check in the terms
- Whether the bonus is really non-sticky. The terms should say that your cash is used first and what happens to the bonus if you withdraw.
- Wagering requirement. Click info on a bonus above to see the requirement for each game type, where we hold it.
- Maximum cashout. Some bonuses limit what you can withdraw from bonus winnings.
- Maximum bet. Many terms limit each bet while a bonus is active.
- Eligible games and payment methods. Some games count less towards the requirement, and some deposit methods do not qualify.
- Minimum deposit, bonus code and expiry. Check that you qualify and how long you have to use the bonus.
How to claim a non-sticky bonus
A bonus is added in one of three ways. The casino adds it automatically when you make a qualifying deposit. You enter a bonus code. Or customer support adds it for you. The terms say which applies.
