Different online slots have been built around a variety of themes since the industry first began, and it's often the games with the strangest themes that get the most attention. This could be the case for the Legend of the White Snake Lady game produced by Yggdrasil. The theme of the game is a Chinese folktale that the vast majority of players have probably never heard of, but it's the great graphics and fun (and atypical) pay table that really drives home the overall experience.
Game Format
The initial format that you see when you start to play this game is really straightforward. There are five reels with three rows of symbols, and you'll have a fixed 243 ways to win on every spin, though they count both left-to-right and right-to-left. Betting ranges from $0.25 per spin with $0.01 coins to $125 per spin with $5 coins, and there are a lot of different denominations to choose from to make it easy to find a bet size that fits you. While this is a pretty standard setup for the game, it's the atypical pay table that really makes this game stand out as being different from what else is available out there.
Pay Table Arrangement
There are only six regular symbols in this game aside from the special symbols, and something that's really interesting is that five of a kind in any of them will actually give you the same large payout. You can get 2,500x for five of the red man symbol, the green serpent lady, the blue figure, the purple woman on the bridge, the yellow man or the bridge symbol. This is an extremely different way of handling the payouts, and we can't say that it's something we've ever seen in any of the video slots that we've reviewed before.
With that having been said, these six symbols are paired up for the other wins. The red and green symbols pay 150x for four and 75x for three, for example. The blue figure and purple woman pay 100x for four of a kind with 50x for three of a kind as well. Finally, you can get a solid 75x or 25x win for four or three, respectively of the yellow figure or bridge symbols. These are some fairly balanced payouts, which is interesting considering how large the rest of them are.
The White Snake Lady Symbol
One of the main aspects of the gameplay is the wild symbol, which appears only in the center reel. What's cool about this symbol is that you can get free re-spins when it shows up, and it'll hold in place while the rest of the symbols spin. More wilds will give you more re-spins, and you can get up to all three wilds locked into place along these lines.
The White Snake Lady symbol will give you 25,000x if you get five of a kind, but there's a catch: If you use a wild to get the win, then you'll only get a 2,500x payout like the rest of the symbols instead. This is an interesting way of handling things, and it reminds us of certain video poker games where making a royal flush with a wild card doesn't give you as high of a payout. In any event, players won't complain about a 2,500x win in this game, especially if there are multiple wilds on the reels at the same time due to the re-spin feature.
Overview of the Slot
Yggrasil has really pulled out a seemingly random theme for this game, but they added gameplay elements that give it a lot of flavor as well, especially with the 243 ways paying in both directions, which is something you don't see super often. With the atypical pay table and the interesting re-spin feature with the wilds holding in place, this game definitely has a lot to offer players as far as their overall experience goes. Moreover, the game has very solid graphics and sound, and it fits right in with some of the best-looking games that you'll find anywhere at this stage of the industry. While we might have liked to have seen a bit more variation in terms of the feature set, we have no real complaints about this game.
