There are lots of online slots out there that use magic themes. However, The Book slot, available at StakeLogic casinos, puts a bit of a different twist on the concept with a setting in a library full of spellbooks. The visuals are pretty strong but do not use 3D graphics. Instead, they preferred high-quality "flat" style symbols and icons instead in this game. As a result, it looks and feels like a high-end magic kids movie or something similar, and that's a great comparison because that's a lot of what the gameplay feels like as well with great features and a balanced pay table with good top wins.

Game Layout

There are certain formats for slots that make the betting denominations particularly even, and this is one of them. It uses five vertical reels, three horizontal rows and a total of 10 paylines. The lines all pay from the left side of the reels to the right side only. You can't change the number of active lines, but the betting allows for up to 10 coins wagered on each payline. Coin values themselves are worth from $0.01 to $0.50 each. This puts the minimum bet at $0.10 per turn, and the maximum is $50 per spin. High rollers, penny players and everyone in between will have bet sizes that work for them as a result.

Magical Wild Book Feature

Most games have a standardized wild symbol that appears like all of the normal symbols in the game. This slot is different in that the wild actually alternates between random options from the card rank symbols. The A, K, Q, J and 10 symbols are usually the most common and lowest-level symbols in a game, and that's the case here, but one of them will randomly become wild on random spins. This means you can get wilds all over the place, but they do not get their own payouts like all of the other symbols in the game do.

Clumped Free Spin Symbols

The way the free spins are determined is pretty atypical in this title as well, and it shows that StakeLogic is capable of thinking outside of the box in a lot of different ways inside of the same game. Free spins symbols appear stacked on the second, third and forth reels. If at least one appears on all three of those reels, you'll get free spins. However, you can get between five and 135 free turns depending on how the symbols fall.

Here's how your number of free spins is determined. Multiply the number of free spins symbols on each reel by each other, and then multiply that amount by five. For example, if you have two, two and one free spins symbols on those three reels, you'll have 2 * 2 * 1 * 5 free spins, which comes to a total of 20. You can get up to 135 free spins by getting three of these symbols on each of those lines.

High-Paying Character Symbols

You won't be surprised to see that the wizard himself is the top-level symbol for this game. He'll give you a 5,000x payout for five of a kind. The lion is up next, and he's worth 2,000x if you get five of him on a payline. The dragon earns 1,000x, which shows there are several large, four-figure pays in this game. The mouse is the lowest of the character symbols, and he still gives a considerable 500x prize, which is up there with what the top payout is in a lot of games.

Card Rank Prizes

Each of the card ranks shows up in a medieval style font with a colored background and a golden type of outline. The yellow A is the highest, naturally, and pays a pretty good 200x win for five. You can earn 150x for five of the red K or 125x for five of the green Q. The blue J still earns 100x with five-of-a-kind combinations, and that drops down to just 50x for five of a kind of the purple 10.

Our Thoughts

We like seeing games that put spins on different themes that have been used a lot instead of just doing the same old thing over and over. That's what StakeLogic pulled off with The Book online slot. We really like how their free spins mode gives you such a wide range of different numbers of free turns you can get, and we also like the randomized wild feature. Don't miss that the top wins are pretty strong as well, and those things all come together to help make this a great game.
