The phoenix is a mythological being that dies by bursting into flames and then is reborn over and over again. It's an allegory for a lot of different things, but in the Wings of the Phoenix slot, available at Konami online casinos, you'll see it represented as a woman. This game has interesting, comic-like graphics, and the feature set is pretty solid as well. The spread of the prizes is also set up so that you get a high hit-rate and still have the ability to get paid some pretty reasonable top jackpots.

Format and Betting

There are five reels, three rows and 30 paylines, and that makes this game pretty standard in terms of overall format. The betting is a little different, however. You'll bet one coin per payline in addition to another 15 coins, but all of the wins are based on multiple of the line bet pay. This helps to compensate for how ridiculously high the hit-rate is for this game, as you'll see down below. You can bet as little as $0.45 per spin along these lines, and the available bet sizes go up $225 per spin as well.

Wild Phoenix Symbol

It's probably not surprising that the phoenix bird is the wild in this game since it's found right in the name. Five of a kind of this symbol pays out the top win of 1,000x. You can also earn 150x for four of a kind on a payline. Three-of-a-kind combinations are worth 50x, and you can even pick up a 5x win for just two of a kind.

This symbol is important because of how it helps to get extra payouts, but because of the way the wins are structured so that all of the non-scatter symbols get pays for just two of a kind, a wild on the first or second reel often guarantees payouts. This is a pretty substantial part of how the game's payouts work, and it's a big part of why the hit-rate is so high.

Scattered Gem Symbols

On each reel, you'll find a green gem held in a golden casing, and this is the scatter. Five of this scatter anywhere on the reels, whether they're on a payline or not, will get you a 7,500x win, the largest in the game. Four is worth 750x, and three gets you 60x, but remember that these are numbers of coins, not a multiple of the line bet win. They're pretty good payouts considering they don't have to fall on paylines.

Mystery Feature

At random, all of the low-tier, card rank symbols will be replaced by the other symbols in the game. This is the mystery feature, and it's not hard to see how it gives you better chances of winning on those random spins.

Free Spins Bonus Round

Three or more of the scattered green gem is worth 8, 15 or 30 free spins. You can re-trigger the feature with three or more scatters, but the mystery feature above has a much higher chance of winning during the free spins round as well. This means the free spins in general are worth more than regular spins.

Important Wins and Payouts

Five of the woman earns 250x, and five of the gems is worth a 125x payout. You can also get 125x for five of the flaming urn, and five of a kind of either of the flaming handles (green or blue) gets you a win of 100x. All of these symbols, along with the wild, can pay out for just two of a kind, which means you'll get a lot of extra payouts.

All six of the card rank symbols have the same top payout. Five of a kind of the A, K, Q, J, 10 or 9 will give you a 50x prize.

Our Thoughts

The Wings of the Phoenix slot by Konami centers around a fast-paced gameplay style and has a pretty intense theme considering how it's not actually based on any particular character from an established brand (though it's hinted at heavily). A lot of players like games like this that give a cool theme and solid gameplay, and it's hard to really find much wrong with it unless you want to say they should have used something besides the card rank symbols for the lower-level pays. Overall, it's a fairly fun game, and though it's not the most competitive title they've produced, it's not bad at all.
