Sumo wrestling is an extremely important sport in Japan, and the Super Sumo online slot by Fantasma Games uses this sport as its theme. You'll have one wrestler in particular who appears on all of the reels in various forms, and he helps you to get winning combinations to drive up your balance. He's a funny guy who likes to dance, but he can also get angry or scared on the reels as well. The graphics are up there with the best in the industry, and the gameplay is straightforward with solid features.

Game Layout

The layout of this game is designed to be a strong foundation for the features and overall gameplay. In this sense, it's a big success with five reels, three rows and 25 paylines. The betting is set up based on one coin per payline, and that comes in with a range of $0.01 to $1. The total bets allowed start at $0.25 on the low side, but they go to $25 on the upper end, which creates a wide enough betting spread for virtually all players. The volatility in this game is at a low-to-medium level, and the pay table is extremely balanced with plenty of medium-sized wins.

The Wild Sumo Wrestler

The wild symbol in this game is the sumo wrestler character that you also see in other symbols. He appears in this instance with a golden ring around him, and he's very happy like he's just won a big tournament. The wild appears on all five reels, and it can sometimes expand to cover the entire reel. It's also responsible for a bonus feature.

A 500x payout is yours if you get five of the wild symbol on a payline. You can also get 120x if you get just four, and the prize for three of a kind is 30x.

Re-spin Feature

Two or more wilds on the reels at once will initiate the re-spin feature. The wilds become sticky, and the rest of the symbols will spin again to give you a free chance to win extra payouts. The key thing to really understand about this feature is that it can happen several times in a row if you get more wilds on the reels. They will all stay sticky for each re-spin until you have a spin where you don't get any additional wilds. The re-spin feature then ends, and you go back to regular gameplay.

Free Spins Bonus Round

To give players another chance to win free payouts, there's a free spins bonus feature. A Super Sumo symbol in a large, red circle appears on the first, third and fifth reels. Pick up all three at once to get 10 free spins. There are no multipliers or other sources of extra value in this bonus, but it's still cool to get a set of free spins, and they can be re-triggered indefinitely.

Important Payouts and Combinations

The biggest winning combination for non-wild symbols is five of the red, angry sumo wrestler. This will give you a payout of 200x. There's a three-way tie for the next-highest with 100x for five of the blue, purple or green sumo wrestlers. These represent the wrestler when he's sad, fear or disgusted, respectively.

All of the rest of the symbols in this game are card rank symbols, each of which pays 60x for five on a payline. The A, K, Q, J and 10 are yellow, red, purple, green and blue, respectively, and they are each created in a Japanese-inspired font with a 3D style of presentation that comes across really well and looks good on the reels.

In Summary

There's not much sumo wrestling that happens in the Super Sumo slot, but Fantasma Games has still managed to use a sumo wrestler in a very smart way. They show many different sides of this character in this slot, and that is the type of character use that we really like to see in these games. The free spins and re-spin features work out well in terms of giving players lots of value, and the expanding wilds coming sometimes helps as well.

Our only complaint with this game is that it seems like it has a lot of untapped potential. We would have liked to see more direct tie-ins to the sumo wrestling theme, though we definitely admit that the character himself is great and is used in an excellent way.
