There are a lot of online slots that use Asian themes, and the Red Temple slot by FUGA Gaming uses one as well. It doesn't take on any one specific idea, which is what a lot of titles in this sub-genre do to stand out. Instead, it has what amounts to a bunch of seemingly random Asian symbols thrown together without much of a cohesive theme. The graphics are so-so as well, but the gameplay is where this title really shines with its great selection of features and chances to win big.

Slot Format

The format for this game allows for 10, 20 or 40 paylines, but your RTP percentage will be the highest if you play with 40, so we're going to assume that's how many you're playing with for the duration of this review. Five reels and three rows house 15 symbols for this game as well. Coin sizes run from $0.01 to $5 apiece, and that gives players wager sizes that run from $0.40 up to $200 apiece. There are clearly enough options in between those two extremes to make sure that you can find a bet size that fits what you're comfortable with and what you're looking for.

Wild Sword Symbols

The symbol with the two samurai swords is the wild in this game. It doesn't give payouts on its own because it only makes an appearance on the first, third and fifth reels. However, it substitutes for all of the regular symbols aside from the free spins, scatter, man, dragon and bonus symbols. It also acts as an expanding wild and will cover the whole reel whenever it appears on the bottom row, so you have a one-third chance of getting an expanding wild with this each time it appears.

Scatter Symbols and Random Payouts

The pays for the scattered waterskin symbols are a bit different than most games. They show up on all five reels, but the payouts you get for three or more have an element of randomness added to them. Three of a kind gets you a prize worth between 3x and 9x. You can win from 20x to 80x for four of a kind of this symbol as well. Finally, you can make it 200x to 600x for five of the scatter. Note that these wins do not depend on the scatters showing up on any certain payline.

Free Spins and Other Goodies

The free spins mode is earned by getting at least three of the free spins symbol anywhere on the game board at the same time. You'll win as many as 15 free spins, and you can get extras added on for the feature as well. These extras include locked (sticky) wild symbols, locked high symbols, multipliers worth up to 5x and more. You can also get better wins overall in this feature because you play with an alternate set of reels that give you better odds of winning overall.

Important Wins and Combinations

The man symbol gets you a 5,000x payout whenever you line up five on an activated payline. Keep in mind that the wild does not substitute for it, however. The dragon mask is worth 2,500x, which is much larger than the top jackpot in most slots, for five of a kind. Five of the blue man mask gets you 2,000x, and the wooden puzzle box is worth 1,500x. Five of a kind of the golden coin pays out 1,000x, and you can also earn 400x for five of the red gate or the wooden shoes.

The red A and blue K symbols eah give you a 200x payout for five of a kind. This is the same size win for five of the green Q or purple J symbols.

Overview

Red Temple isn't going to win any awards for being the most original game out there in terms of theme and concept, but we don't think that's what FUGA Gaming was really going for here. Instead, they bring some very solid gameplay with a type of theme that virtually all online slot fans will be familiar with. Along these lines, they've packed it with lots of top-heavy payouts and a medium-high volatility, so it's definitely about trying to hit big wins and nothing else.

We like the way the features work in this game and how everything comes together, but it doesn't really stand out in the sub-genre of Asian-themed slots all that much, which is what it would need to get more than an average rating from us.
