There have been very distinct periods in the slot world since back in the day with the original fruit machines. Along these lines, there has been one major divide, and that's between three-reel titles and those with five reels. The Fruits N Fire slot, available at Synot Games casinos, puts players in a position to enjoy a good mix of both worlds in the same package. There are major elements of both styles of games found here, and that helps to give players enough of a throwback to the three-reel days that they can enjoy the retro factor without the disadvantages of that style of slot.

Slot Format

The format and layout of the game itself crosses up motifs from both styles of slots as well. It's decidedly a video slot since it uses five reels with three rows, but it uses five paylines, which is a hallmark of many classic slots. Those paylines are locked in place, so you can't change them, and your betting selection comes from a handful of different total bet sizes. You can divide each bet by five to get the line bet amounts. All paylines pay from left to right only.

Players can wager between $0.20 on the low end and $90 on the high end per spin. This corresponds to a range of $0.04 per payline to $18 per payline. These are somewhat atypical numbers, but they still provide enough of a betting range that players don't have to worry about breaking the bank or not having bet sizes high enough to make things interesting for the high rollers.

Expanding Wild Symbols

You wouldn't often see wild symbols in classic titles, and if you did, they were often only wild for certain symbols. This changes in this game since you'll have wilds that appear on the second, third and fourth reels to make it much easier to get winning combinations. However, they are worth more than they seem to be at first glance because they always expand. When you get a wild anywhere on the middle three reels, which are the only three reels where they appear, they will expand vertically both up and down to cover the whole reel every single time they show up.

Two Different Scatter Symbols

The scatter symbol really became popular on five-reel games because there's enough screen real estate to make them a viable concept. They're hard to make work on a classic title, though some games try, because there's so little room to work with them. In this game, there are two different scatters, but they are both stars. You'll want to pay attention to the differences between them so that you know how they work and how the payouts are given.

The first is a gold star with an orange background, and it shows up on all of the reels. You'll get 100x for five, 25x for four and 3x for three of a kind with this symbol. However, there's also an extra wild that's a gold start on a red background with the Fruits N Fire slot logo on it, and that only shows up on the first, third and fifth reel. Get all three of this symbol for a 30x payout.

Other Important Wins

The lucky red seven symbol is pretty important and stands out because it gives you a win for just two of a kind. It's the only symbol to do so. Five of a kind of it on a payline gets you a 500x top win. Five of the Liberty Bell symbol si worth 150x, and the watermelon payout drops down to 100x.

From here, we're in the territory of the low-tier pays. This includes 40x for the grapes and 20x for the plum, orange, lemon or cherries for all of their respective five-of-a-kind combinations

In Summary

There is a whole sub-genre filled with video slots that have throwback themes to three-reel titles, and the Fruits N Fire slot by Synot Games is definitely above-average within that sub-genre. It has great graphics and reasonable features that don't get too far away from the spirit of the classic games. With that having been said, it doesn't compare too favorably with the five-reel genre in general, but that's okay since it's only trying to appeal to a niche audience. If you like classic titles but want to try out something with a bit more action, this game is a good place to start.
