In a significant move to curb illicit gambling marketing practices, the Danish Consumer Ombudsman, the Gambling Advertising Board, and the Danish Gambling Authority have formed a strategic alliance. This collaboration is designed to reinforce regulatory oversight and assure adherence to laws within Denmark's gambling sector.

Detailed Framework and Responsibility Distribution

Under the new agreement, designed to optimize efforts and eliminate overlap, the roles of each authority are clearly defined. The Consumer Ombudsman will monitor compliance with the Marketing Act and safeguard consumer rights by ensuring fair marketing practices among gambling businesses. The Danish Gambling Authority will concentrate on the application of the Gambling Act’s directives, particularly concerning promotional and advertising norms in the sector. The Gambling Advertising Board, an autonomous entity established by the industry, plays a pivotal role in supervising and managing complaints about marketing practices that breach the sector's ethical code. This code is crucial for promoting social responsibility, protecting vulnerable groups, and reducing gambling-related harm.

Ongoing Coordination and Future Plans

To sustain the effectiveness of their unified approach, these regulatory bodies have pledged to regularly exchange information and have annual strategy sessions. These gatherings are essential for evaluating current cases, tackling new challenges and planning additional enhancements to the regulatory framework. In addition to regulating gambling marketing practices, the Danish Gambling Authority, also known as Spillemyndigheden, actively promotes compliance throughout the gambling industry.

Noteworthy is the upcoming third session of anti-money laundering (AML) training on October 31, tailored to equip operators with the necessary skills for AML law implementation, following highly successful prior sessions in November 2023 and April 2024. Furthermore, Spillemyndigheden plans to debut new licensing rights for game providers by 2025, aiming to fuel innovation and maintain strict regulatory compliance, especially in light of the recent downturn in monthly global gaming revenue in Denmark, which saw a 6.9% drop to DKK 595 million in April.
