Casumo Withdraws Its iGaming Operations in Ontario

European online gambling company Casumo is set to cease its operations in Ontario, ultimately pulling out of the regulated iGaming market in the province. After more than three years of operation, the company is preparing to shut down its Ontario-based activities while closing player accounts following its last active day.

The company announced that all gaming activities for players in Ontario would come to an end on April 30, with a complete shutdown of player accounts by May 14. A notice on Casumo's Ontario-facing website advises customers to settle any remaining balances before the service cessation.

The company initiated email communication on April 1 to inform Ontario-based users of this planned exit. As of this date, new user registrations were halted, and minimum withdrawal thresholds were put in place to streamline the exit process. The operational wind-up includes pivotal dates, like April 8 being the last day for players to claim outstanding bonuses.

Any previously activated bonuses may be used until April 30, after which deposits will be halted as the province enters Casumo's final day of gameplay.

Strategic Retreat From Ontario's Market

Casumo, originally founded in Sweden and headquartered in Malta, initially joined Ontario's regulated iGaming market after being granted a license by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario in 2022. The company quickly became operational following the province's expansion into regulated online gaming in November of that year.

Throughout its tenure in Ontario, Casumo boasted a diverse catalog of over 3,300 slot titles, table games, and live dealer content. This extensive library was bolstered by partnerships with significant industry names such as Playtech, Pragmatic Play, Light & Wonder, NetEnt, and Play'n GO.

Even though Casumo is withdrawing from Ontario, it remains active in other Canadian provinces like Alberta, British Columbia, Quebec, and parts of Atlantic Canada, according to its Canada-targeted platforms outside Ontario. It's yet uncertain if Casumo intends to pursue a license for Alberta's anticipated regulated iGaming market, scheduled to debut on July 13.

Implications for Ontario's Evolving iGaming Landscape

Ontario is recognized as one of the most densely populated regulated iGaming markets in North America, featuring numerous licensed operators vying for market share. While many companies continue to operate, the market has seen several entities exit since the opening of its regulated sector.

Casumo's exit aligns it with other notable departures, including Fitzdares, Aristocrat Interactive's white-label brands like Betiton and Magic Red Casino, as well as Wildz Group, all of which disengaged from the market the previous year. Earlier in February, Rivalry, a Toronto-based company, also ceased Ontario operations.

Economic pressures have been cited by some operators. For instance, Fitzdares noted "the cost of doing business was becoming prohibitive," while Wildz Group opted to pivot towards B2B technology services instead. Currently, Ontario hosts 48 licensed operators managing 82 gaming sites.

The latest addition, BetNova, launched operations on April 9. This competitive landscape includes contests against Ontario Lottery and Gaming, with online casinos making up the majority of monthly wagers and revenue. Casumo's withdrawal further signals ongoing shifts as operators reassess their market positions in this vibrant sector.
